Overview
Nanluogu Xiang, located north of the Forbidden City and east of Beijing’s central axis, boasts a history of approximately 800 years. The lane stretches 786 meters from its southern end at Di'anmen Dongdajie to its northern end at Gulou Dongdajie (Drum Tower East Street). The narrow lane features sub-lanes that run in pairs, maintaining the traditional layout of streets and lanes from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).
Historical Significance
Nanluogu Xiang retains the architectural style and layout typical of the Yuan Dynasty, earning it the title of a "living fossil" of Yuandadu's city design. It is home to a wealth of cultural and historical relics, as well as residences of notable figures, making it an important area for preserving the historical appearance of old Beijing. The area serves as a buffer zone for the conservation of the Old Imperial City. Today, 28 cultural relics protection units are located here, at national, municipal and district levels, including landmarks such as Keyuan Garden, and the homes of notable figures like Sengge Rinchen, Rong Lu, Hong Chengchou and Kui Jun.
A Fusion of Old and New
Walking through the lanes of Nanluogu Xiang or gently opening the old wooden gates, visitors can still feel the echoes of old Beijing life. However, the area has transformed with the times. Cars now line the quiet lanes, neon signs of "Internet cafes" light up the streets, and pedicabs ferry domestic and international tourists through the narrow alleys. Visitors from around the world stroll into pubs and coffee houses that blend traditional hutong culture with modern flair, creating a unique atmosphere that merges Eastern and Western influences. This vibrant fusion has helped establish Nanluogu Xiang as a popular bar street, showcasing the beauty of Beijing’s cultural evolution.
